Honest Stitch Fix Review 2021

So if I’m being honest I’ve known about Stitch Fix for years. Several bloggers I follow have done reviews on it as well, some good some not so good. Really the sub-par reviews weren’t even what kept me from trying it out, the prices were.

I’m pretty cheap when it comes to clothing. I like to wait until I have a good coupon or a store is having a super good sale. Occasionally I’ll buy a cheap top from Amazon, but that’s about it. But if you saw my post about the new me LOL, you know I’m doing new things, so I decided to give Stitch Fix a try. Spoiler: I freaking LOVED it.

How To Sign Up For Stitch Fix

Signing up is super easy. There’s just a few steps to the process. You go to Stitch Fix’s website, click “Take Your Style Quiz” to get started on what you like and don’t like. It’s kind of neat they do this first, so that you can really get a taste of how they’re going to gauge your style before you have to put in all the boring stuff like your address and credit card… bleh.

The initial style quiz is super simple, like three questions. Then you go into creating an account. Email, address, credit card normal stuff.

How Stitch Fix Determines Your Style

Once you’ve created an account you will take a more in depth quiz to get to know your preferences. It also asks you about your body type, how you like your clothes to fit, and what types of clothes you usually wear or are looking for. I also really liked that you could tell them how adventurous you wanted to be, so if you were looking to completely revamp your style they would send you some wildcard items.

I really like the visual quiz also. They put multiple pictures up on the screen at a time and you choose which ones you like/don’t like. I think this is so helpful in making sure your fix is successful. You take the initial one that’s several screens, but then Stitch Fix also sends you an email later saying you can take another style quiz by logging into your account. I did this because I figured the more I did the better they would know what I was looking for.

What Does Stitch Fix Send You

They have categories for literally everything, even shoes, bags, and accessories. What I like about this is that if you are looking for a full outfit of things then you can get that. But I also like that I had the option to completely opt out of categories also.

So for instance I opted out of jackets, bags, and accessories. This was simply because I assumed from the start I wasn’t going to be willing to pay prices for these items through Stitch Fix. Also, I’m weird with coats/jackets and feel like that’s something that would be better for me just to go to a store myself and purchase. Plus honestly, here in the deep south (SC), it doesn’t even get cold enough for me to need tons of jackets.

Stitch Fix Price Ranges

Ok, so here’s where my eyeballs popped out of my head a little. They do allow you to choose a price “category”. So this is a little dropdown with a question something like “How much do you usually spend on blank?” It’s broken down in to the different categories of items they offer so you have to answer each one separately.

I’m not going to lie, when I first clicked the drop down, I almost stopped and just said nevermind. The first category with an actual price started at like $50-$150. And mind you this is the same for all categories, so they were literally starting a category for shirts at a price of $50.

I was cringing. I have never ever in my entire life spent $50 on a shirt. And in my adult life I don’t even spend that on jeans…

So I was really concerned at this point, but there is also an option that says “as little as possible” or something like that. Whatever the wording is I remember thinking it made me sound like a cheap a** to pick that, but guess what I picked on every single category, yep as little as possible.

So the person who got assigned my fix probably rolled their eyes. Don’t care.

This worked out for me though, because while all the clothes were above prices I would normally pay. I ended up loving them so much I kept them all! With some prodding from my husband.

You Can Preview Your Fix

I’m not sure when they started this, but from the way the email made it seem, this wasn’t always the case. So now Stitch Fix sends you an email saying your stylist has pulled some items for you to preview. You can then login to your account and see a list of ten items with pictures that your stylist thinks would be a good fit for you.

For some reason this gave me so much anxiety. Like you would think this would be helpful since you can be like yep like that no don’t like that. But it felt overwhelming to have to narrow down the choices to the five items. What if I picked something that I think looks good in a picture but it’s actually horrible and then miss out on something that would have been perfect. Anyways, life with anxiety.

I did off the top eliminate a pair of shoes. While they were cute, I felt like they were overpriced for what they were. Oh, sorry forgot to mention it shows you the price of each item at this point as well, so that’s helpful to eliminate things also. I then decided against a pair of shorts. I have lots of shorts and I already have some similar to these and they were pricey.

I ended up with five items that I felt like were a mix of practical that I could wear most pieces to work plus a few indulgences and then a jumpsuit was my “out of the box” pick. I have never worn a jumpsuit thing before. I feel like it’s odd you have to take all your clothes off to pee? I also just felt like they wouldn’t be flattering on me. But at this point seeing the prices, I am anticipating sending almost all of the items except maybe two back.

So after spending entirely too much time debating these items, I submitted it and got notification my fix would be there in a few days!

Unboxing My Fix

When my fix finally arrived (like 4-5 days later LOL, impatient much), I was super excited to unbox it! Everything came nicely folded to minimize wrinkles and all wrapped up in a cute bundle together so they weren’t flying around in the box. I also really liked that they were wrapped in paper instead of plastic. I hate that weird plastic smell when clothes are shipped like that. Yes, I realize I’m going to wash them, it’s the principle.

They also give you super cute inserts with outfit ideas for all of the items you received. So ideas for styling items together but also for what to wear them with (if you don’t have complete outfits like I did). They also included accessories that were offered from Stitch Fix, so you could go back and purchase them also. See end section on their “curated shop”. I really liked the styling guides for ideas, especially for someone who doesn’t really accessorize a whole lot. But I didn’t end up actually buying any of the other items.

They also included a cute note from your stylist and a itemized list of how much each piece costs. This also included a total and showed you that you get a 25% discount if you purchased all five items, so that’s a plus if you end up liking everything. It also showed you would be credited your $20 styling fee towards anything you purchased as well.

My Stitch Fix Items

Here we go! The fun part! Immediately when I opened the box I was like, “I’m def keeping this cardigan.” I have an obsession with cardigans. They are also my general fall/winter go to because again, I live in South Carolina. We’re usually wearing t-shirts at Christmas and your allergies are acting back up again by mid-late March. Also, my office temperature is incredibly weird, so layers really help during the work week.

Next I noticed the jeans. They are very distressed (meaning actual tears/holes), so my first thought was that I would pass on those because I can’t wear them to work. But they were cute either way. The nice shirt that I got was cute, but a color that I don’t normally wear, so I was kind of like what will I wear with this, but I like it? Then the green cropped pants. Also, not a color I normally wear, but a style pants I wear to work all the time, so I thought maybe I should branch out in my color game.

And last the jumpsuit. When I took it out of the box I was just immediately like, no probably not. I don’t do patterns or jumpsuits, so I guess I just judged it right off the bat. I didn’t have a good feeling about it and since it was the most expensive thing in the box I figured I would send it back for sure. Well, I was wrong.

First Try On

I put the jeans and the cute top on first, since I already knew I was going to love the cardigan. The jeans really surprised me though. I loved them. They fit perfect, like weirdly perfect. And I love the distressing and the wash of them. My husband also commented on how good they looked and they were way better than all my “mom jeans”. Which for the record was the first time I even realized he thought I wore mom jeans. So now I’m feeling like I dress like a grandma, but ok, thanks for the compliment I guess even if it was backhanded?

The shirt was super cute too. The tie at the bottom isn’t something I would normally pick out, but I thought it was really flattering. The material is very lightweight, but not cotton. It’s for sure a shirt I could wear to work with dress pants. You could dress it up or down. I also didn’t hate the pattern. Not too bold, but also adds interest to the top. The color looked really good with my skin tone too, which is interesting since again this isn’t a color I really have at all.

So this outfit was a keeper!

Second Try On

I put a tank top (one I already own) on and threw the cardigan on just to take a picture. I knew this cardigan was me. Me and the cardigan had a connection from the beginning. It is really lightweight, but still will be great for fall. The colors are so pretty and colors that I already have things to match with, so that was great. It looked really good with the jeans too! I also loved the length of it. It’s long, but not like weirdly long. And it fit perfect! Not super tight, but not hanging off either.

Keeping the cardigan duh.

Third Try On

I left the cardigan on, because I was raving about how much I loved cardigans… adding to my clear unwillingness to admit that maybe I do dress like a grandma? I switched out the jeans to the green cropped pants. These are comfy ya’ll. The material is really light, but still looks very dressy or at least business casual like my work is. They are pull on which is really nice when you are always running late in the mornings! Oops.

They fit really well too. They weren’t loose, but they also didn’t feel inappropriately tight for the office and seemed like a good mix of tailored but floppy if that makes any sense at all.

Update: Learned after I purchased these you cannot dry them. Well it’s suggested not to dry them. Which means they dry really really wrinkly hanging up, which then means they need to be ironed. Which is something I do not own one of ….. so. This is pending. I’m probably going to throw them on super low heat with a damp washcloth for like 5-10 minutes and hope for the best.

Either way, I liked them enough to consider keeping them

Fourth Try On

I kept the showstopper for last! Actually, I kept the jumpsuit for last because I was like I’m not going to like this at all and am not keeping it, so I wanted to start on a good streak. Oh My Word was I wrong.

I freaking love this jumpsuit. The material is so incredibly soft. It’s like hard to explain, not silky, but like super light weight cotton. The print is actually so subtle I don’t really feel like I’m wearing a print at all. I love navy. I have lots of navy things, so the color is perfect. And even though I almost never wear spaghetti straps, this was so flattering. The fit and cut was literally perfect. It would be great for running errands or girls night or even dressed up for a wedding. It’s so versatile and so, so cute.

Oh did I mention it has pockets. Yes, pockets.

Did I want the jumpsuit, yes. Did I know I shouldn’t keep all these things, yes.

My sweet husband was actually the one to tell me YOLO. Well OK, he didn’t say that. He hates acronyms or maybe just that one? Either way. He was like babe keep the clothes, it’s just $200 and they all look so good, you need new clothes.

Ladies, if your man doesn’t tell you to keep all the clothes after he told you how smoking hot you were in each of them, find a new one. They’re rare like unicorns, but they’re out there.

And so, here I am with five new awesome pieces in my wardrobe. I’m writing this a week later and have already worn everything except the cardigan… because it’s August… in South Carolina.

Wrapping Up And Stitch Fix’s Customized “Shop”

Since I decided to keep all my items, all I had to do was go into my Stitch Fix account and let them know I was keeping everything. Super easy only took a minute. You also got to leave a custom note for your stylist for next time or thanking them. I’m also pretty sure if I just didn’t send the clothes back they would have charged my card. I guess I wanted to make sure I got my 25% discount.

What I like about Stitch Fix also is that you can cancel anytime. Or if you want to leave your subscription going there’s lots of options. I left mine set to every three months. I might do it again, or I might not. But they give you the option to turn it on and off at anytime you like.

If I had of ended up not liking any or some of the items they gave me a return bag that was already labeled and ready to go. You just had to throw the clothes in there, seal it up and drop it off.

One issue I had is they only gave you three days to return the clothes. Life gets busy and I can see how this would be a deterrent for some people. I had time the night I got them to try them on, but I’m sure that wouldn’t always be the case. I have read from other reviews you can ask for them to extend this period if you contact customer service. But I hate contacting customer service….

Stitch Fix also emailed me letting me know I could browse a curated shop in my account that was made just for me. I’m assuming there’s some kind of algorithm that does this based on your quiz answers and then if you kept anything from your fix. But they basically sell this as “you don’t have to mindlessly scroll through big online retailers searching for that perfect thing.” The premise is that they found things they know you’re going to love, so you only have to scroll through a few items.

I did browse through this, but coming off my $220 purchase, buying something else seemed like too much. Plus many of the items were pricier than I wanted especially since I’m not sure if you have the option of sending those back or not.

All in all, I really loved Stitch Fix. I may just leave my subscription at every three months so I can update my granny wardrobe without having to leave my house. We’ll see. YOLO.

Have you tried Stitch Fix? Did you have a similar experience or was your fix way off?? I’d love to know if this was just a fluke or not? Let me know in the comments!
